Is the met or moma better. Personally what I love best about the Met are the incredible Mummies and ancient Greek sculptures. The Guggenheims collection is wholly undistinguished. Depends what you like best.
The Met probably has the broadest appeal. If this is what you want to see this is the place to see it. I want to spend some 3 hrs in the musuem with my hubby and then do general touristy.
MOMA has the premier collection of modern art as I am sure you know. Have your late dinner at or after the Met. The permanent collection at the Met is vast and deep.
It holds art from all periods of human history and from all over the world. The Gug was the first of the museums to highlight the building rather than the art a trend continuing today it seems with nearly every new museum built. Then there is the Egyptian wing with the temple of Dendur.
If youre bringing kids. MOMA is an excellent though more narrow collection. There i said it.
MoMa is located in Midtown Manhattan New York City. As Picasso biographer John Richardson tells Colacello The Met is upwardly mobile at the moment and its doing everything it can to be more modern and more varied in what it has to offer. Also classical art greek statues most are replicas though but in a very nice space.
One a day is much better. The Metropolitan has a cross section of periods. MOMA is all about Modern Art meaning its focus is on work produced after about 1850.

You cant just pit two world class museums against one another and simply choose which is better. If you must do both find a MOMA member and start your morning with members hour and seeing your favorites - dont forget to shop there - visit Tiffanys - have lunch - take your stuff to your hotel - chill horizontally for an hour or two and then head to the Met. One is not better than the other but they do serve different periods.
I think it completely depends on your area of interest in art. Old mastersantiquities - the Met. MoMA is good for quick dirty tour of famous paintings easily covered well sort of in a few hours.

Im not sure how youre defining classic but if you meant it broadly enough to include the Impressionists itd be a shame to miss Van Goghs Starry Night Monets Water Lillies Picassos Three Musicians and a slew of other classics -- all of which are at MOMA.
It is all modern art and if that is what you want to see it doesnt get any better. Moma is midtown and very convenientadded bonus - new building. Much narrower in scope but concentrated like stock reduced in a pan sauce.
The Natural History Museum would be ideal for. Probably the Met because its much much larger will also include modern art and has pieces. For me i find the Met to be a total bore.
The Met does have a small 20th Century collection but cant compare with the more focused MoMA in that area. The do brilliant costume exhibits. If you like modern art photography and architecture - MoMA is a better pick.
Much of the art at MoMA is sufficiently demanding that Im not sure kids that young would enjoy it much though Im sure there are some that do. Its a question of what is better for you personally. Like the Met MoMA is on a youth kick which in the museum world means anyone under 60.

I take it you plan to visit just for a few hours. Unfortunately going there with kids may take more time than youre budgeted for. If youd like to see both but feel like the price of entrance is daunting you can give less at the Met.
Ancient cultures medieval arms European Renaissance the American wing alone is worth much of a day. For most people MOMA has a lot of weird stuff and if you arent into modern art you just dont get it. It has the best modern art collection impressionists some photography and architecture.
